The beauty of buildings sometimes lies in how unique their design is. The Steel Craft house is located in the Utrecht district of Wittevrouwen. It has the description to be a self-build architecture. As a matter of fact, the definition of self-build architecture is when a building is constructed by the 'hands of the owner'. The transformation was from a garage to a living space. Its new conversion is a crafted wooden house with a Corten steel façade.
Abstraction and materiality
The clients realized the entire project with the help of Zecc ( architecture company) who designed the façade. According to everyone, who was part of the building and designing process, it was a challenging project. It required good cooperation, perseverance and a passion for the crafts. The details in the design have been done carefully and there were many phases that it went through to get to its final construction.
The materials used to design the house are distinguishable by how they create a connection with surrounding buildings in the neighbourhood. It checks the list of form, composition and details. The facade has steel cladding, including the hood with dormer and chimney. The strong elemental designs of plinths, speck tires, roller layers and roof mouldings, are in the steel plate divisions. The appearance of the steel sets contrasts with the neighbourhood masonry buildings. Furthermore, the light discolouration of the steel material still fits beautifully while creating a pleasant contrast.
Each window expresses the function of the room inside. Together the windows form an abstract composition. The façade is designed to adjourn on the street level. The interior has a soft light peering through. Skylights and the patio allow for extra daylight. The ‘ bay window’ protrudes from the outside ensuring bathroom privacy in the interior. Behind the French balcony lays the living space.
