Utrecht’s cultural and heritage sector has received 3 million Euros as an emergency fund from the Utrecht Municipality. According to many institutions, they have been suffering financially due to the pandemic. The Municipality had already offered financial support when the sector closed its doors in spring. The sector can use financial aid to compensate for the rest of 2020 and use it to continue their activities. Culture and heritage play an important role in the city. The municipality wants to maintain the diversity of art and culture within neighbourhoods and remain attractive for residents and visitors alike.
“WE SEE THAT THE SURVIVAL OF CULTURAL AND HERITAGE INSTITUTIONS IS IN DANGER. THIS ALSO PUTS THE SUPPLY OF ART AND CULTURE AT RISK FOR EVERYONE. CULTURE OFFERS PEOPLE DIVERSION AND RELAXATION. IT CONTRIBUTES TO CONNECTION AND TO UNDERSTAND THE WORLD WE LIVE IN. THIS IS NEEDED DURING THIS TIME AND IN THE FUTURE. THAT IS WHY WE OFFER EMERGENCY SUPPORT.” Anke Kleij, Councilor of Culture
Emergency Financial Aid
The municipality sent emergency aid before the summer. The subsidized institutions are of main importance. Non-subsidized institutions can also apply, as long as they receive at least 25 per cent from other contributors. This percentage allows the municipality to see that the institutions have some form of support. The maximum amount they can receive is €300,000. As for the institutions that rent a building from the municipality they get an emergency aid discount for the rent payments. The State and province have also contributed. The institutions can apply for subsidy until the 22 of November via the digital counter of the municipality.
